Once Upon a Time in China

(黃飛鴻)

1991 | Starring: Jet Li, Rosamund Kwan Chi-lam, Jacky Cheung Hok-yau, Yuen Biao, Kent Cheng Jut-si

Directed By Tsui Hark

Tsui Hark’s Once Upon A Time In China was one of those rare productions that sparks latent interest in a perennial favorite, then transforms it into an instant franchise. It quickly spawned four sequels, a prequel, numerous imitations and was parodied in several comedies. Yet, OUATIC is not the first movie to chronicle the adventures of Wong Fei-hong—a legendary martial artist from the Ching Dynasty of the late nineteenth century. WFH was a real person whose story has become part of HK’s cultural folklore.

Tsui Hark’s most significant contribution was the casting of Jet Li as Wong Fei-hong. Li, a Beijing native and youthful martial artist, achieved fame in a series of early 1980s Shaolin Temple movies. Jet’s infectious grin and dazzling martial arts skills made him an excellent choice to revive the legend. Although Jet Li has moved on to fame with a variety of other roles—including the WFH-like folk hero Fong Sai-yuk—most of his fans associate him most closely with the virtuous Wong.

OUATIC has WFH running an herbal clinic with his associates Porky (Kent Cheng) and Buck Tooth Sol (Jacky Cheung). Yuen Biao plays Wong’s sidekick Leung Fu and Rosamund Kwan plays his Aunt Yee. Like all WFH movies, OUATIC chronicles Wong’s battles with corrupt local officials and the encroaching effects of Western civilization on China.

As with its sequels, OUATIC is imbued with a strong anti-European sentiment. British, French and American troops have invaded China, and are portrayed as foolish, self-righteous imperialists who impose themselves, their beliefs and their technology upon the Chinese without any regard for how it will affect their native culture.
